Stainless Steel Castings
Quaker City Castings produces virtually all grades of stainless steel castings. Stainless steel is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass.
Stainless steel castings do not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. However, it is not fully stain-proof in low-oxygen, high-salinity, or poor air-circulation environments. There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel castings are used where both the properties of steel and corrosion resistance are required.
Stainless steel castings differ from carbon steel castings by the amount of chromium present. Unprotected carbon steel rusts readily when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film (the rust) is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide; and, because of the greater volume of the iron oxide, this tends to flake and fall away. Stainless steels contain sufficient chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide, which prevents further surface corrosion by blocking oxygen diffusion to the steel surface and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal’s internal structure. Due to the similar size of the steel and oxide ions, they bond very strongly and remain attached to the surface. Stainless steel castings are used in many applications where corrosion resistance and also material strength are critical.
Passivation occurs only if the proportion of chromium is high enough and oxygen is present.
In castings, stainless steel is often used in applications where the part is likely to encounter a corrosive environment i.e. liquid or gas handling components. Stainless steel is used in castings across a variety of industries including hydro power, locomotive, pumps, valves, power generation, automotive, aviation, and many different types of industrial process equipment. Stainless steel castings can be particularly cost-effective as opposed to forgings or plate where significant post processing must occur.
Why Choose Stainless Steel Castings?
Stainless steel castings offer several advantages over other materials. The key benefits include:
- Durability: Stainless steel castings provide exceptional strength and durability, making them suitable for high-stress applications.
- Corrosion Resistance: The chromium content in stainless steel forms a protective layer that resists corrosion, ensuring a longer lifespan for the castings.
- Versatility: Available in various grades and finishes, stainless steel castings can be tailored to meet specific requirements for different environments and applications.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Although stainless steel may have a higher upfront cost compared to other materials, its longevity and low maintenance requirements often result in cost savings over time.
- Hygiene: Stainless steel is easy to clean and maintain, making it ideal for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries where hygiene is critical.
- Aesthetic Appeal: The sleek, modern appearance of stainless steel makes it a popular choice for architectural and decorative applications.
Applications of Stainless Steel Castings
Stainless steel castings are utilized across a wide range of industries due to their unique properties. Some common applications include:
- Hydro Power: Components for turbines and other equipment exposed to water.
- Locomotive: Parts that require high strength and corrosion resistance.
- Pumps and Valves: Essential for handling corrosive liquids and gases.
- Power Generation: Components that must withstand high temperatures and pressures.
- Automotive: Parts exposed to harsh environments and high stress.
- Aviation: Critical components requiring lightweight strength and corrosion resistance.
- Industrial Process Equipment: Used in machinery that processes chemicals, food, and pharmaceuticals.
